Europe challenges TikTok recommendations over mental health risks
November 6, 2026. The European Commission preliminarily found TikTok in breach of the Digital Services Act over risks associated with repeated recommendations in its “For You” feed.
The Commission warns that repeated exposure to similar videos concerning sadness, isolation or body image could harm mental health, especially among minors and vulnerable adults. Its assessment focuses on how TikTok identifies and mitigates those risks. TikTok rejected the allegations, Reuters reported.
Why it matters
Recommendation systems shape much of the user experience. A final decision could require changes to controls and processes in Europe, with implications for platform design and oversight.
