CFTC clears path for perpetual futures on individual stocks

November 3, 2026. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said perpetual futures on individual stocks can begin trading on designated contract markets that also hold the required SEC registration. The agency did not say all such contracts had already begun trading.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig said the products were deemed approved as security futures and fall under both CFTC and SEC frameworks. Perpetual futures have no fixed expiration; specific terms depend on the contract and venue.

Why it matters

The announcement provides a U.S. regulatory path for perpetual derivatives linked to individual stocks, a structure already used in cryptocurrency markets. Actual availability will depend on the platforms and products offered.

Joint oversight may provide greater clarity to intermediaries and investors, but it does not eliminate the risk of losses or the effects of leverage. The products’ commercial development and liquidity remain to be seen.
